What is the Pell Grant?

The Pell Grant is a federal grant given to students to pay for school. The amount you get is based on your Expected Family Contribution (EFC). Most ETV students receive the full amount of the Pell Grant (just over $6,000/year for the 2019-2020 school year) because their EFC is low. But, if you are married or you’ve been adopted, your spouse or family’s income counts towards your EFC, so you might not get the full amount or you might not get anything at all.

How do I get the Pell Grant?

You need to fill out the FAFSA – the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

What does the Pell Grant pay for?

If you owe any money to the school for tuition or housing or whatever, the money will be used to pay the school first. Any remaining money will be refunded to you, usually around the middle of the semester (October or March). (Check you some tips on what to do with your Pell Grant refund here)

Do I need to pay back the Pell Grant?

Maybe. If you withdraw from all or some of your classes, you may be required to pay back at lease part of your Pell Grant. Please check with your school’s financial aid office before you withdraw from school. If you don’t pay it back, you won’t be able to register for school next semester.
