Medicaid

Under the Affordable Care Act which went into effect on January 1, 2014, young adults who age out of the foster care system may keep their Medicaid coverage until they turn 26.

The basic eligibility requirements are the same in every state:

  • You must have aged out of foster care at 18 or the age of emancipation in your state;
  • You must have been on Medicaid while in foster care; and
  • You must be under the age of 26.

Because it’s not always easy to find the information you need to get Medicaid, especially if you’ve already aged out and no longer have a caseworker, Foster Care to Success found it for you. Just click on your state below to learn about how to stay on – or get on – Medicaid as a former foster youth.
